America's preservation policy... Driving on the wrong side of the road

My latest article, featured in “Plaster Bits: A publication of the Center for Painted Wall Preservation”, discusses the differences in perception and policy in the treatment of wall paintings in the UK vs the US. Here’s an excerpt:

America's preservation policy... Driving on the wrong side of the road!

Although the tradition of painted architectural decoration is no less significant in the United States than in the UK or Europe, there is far less awareness of the American tradition and our historic wall paintings are less revered than their overseas counterparts. But why is there such a discrepancy in the way these paintings are viewed and treated in the US? As a wall painting conservator who has worked for twelve years in both the US and the UK, I have had the privilege to observe the preservation processes and how they operate in both countries. In comparing the two, several legal and cultural distinctions are apparent that contribute to the division in both the perception and treatment of these priceless objects.

Conservation of Maclise murals, Houses of Parliament

A new short video is out highlighting Phase 3 of the conservation treatment of Daniel Maclise’s monumental wall paintings, “Trafalgar” and “Waterloo”, located in the Royal Gallery of the UK’s Houses of Parliament. Initiated in 2016, the remedial treatment is a joint project between myself, Opus Conservation, and the Perry Lithgow Partnership. Phase 3 was completed in February 2019, and the 4th and final phase is underway now.

Card Murals Installed in Town Hall

The completion of a recent collaborative project to conserve and re-home two, uniquely stenciled mural paintings in Charlestown, RI received some nice press this week in The Westerly Sun. It was a project filled with new and interesting challenges. We’re thrilled these special paintings have been installed at long last in their new and permanent home!
