Katey Corda, Wall painting conservator

Corda Conservation LLC was started by Katey Corda in 2018. Katey obtained her M.A. Degree in the Conservation of Wall Painting from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, UK in 2007. As an independent, practical art conservator, she has built her career specifically around the preservation of murals and decorated architectural surfaces. This has brought her to all corners of the world and allowed her to work on renowned art spanning centuries, from King Tut’s Tomb to Diego Rivera’s Sugar Cane.

Now based in the District of Columbia, Katey is the only conservator in the area holding a degree specific to the treatment of wall paintings. She is trained to work on all paint mediums, including fresco, oil, tempera, and acrylic, on multiple support types, such as cement, stone, brick, earth and others. She has a specialism in the removal of aerosol graffiti from painted surfaces, as seen from her MA thesis and experience working on The Berlin Wall. Katey is skilled in both preventive and remedial conservation techniques, diagnostic investigations, and state-of-the-art methods of documentation including photogrammetry.

Katey has experience staffing and leading high-profile, large-scale projects that often include a training and supervision component for students and recent graduates. She regularly acts as a consultant for large institutions and organizations such as the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles and the Houses of Parliament in London, UK.

Katey sits on the Board of Advisers for the Center for Painted Wall Preservation. She is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC), a member of The Institute of Conservation (ICON) and the Washington Conservation Guild (WCG). She was an inaugural recipient of the William M. Dietel Prize for Research in the conservation of wall painting (2016).
